Zu seinen grössten Erfolgen zählen die Filme «The Missing», in dem er an der Seite von CATE BLANCHETT und TOMMY LEE JONES zu sehen ist, «Cold Mountain» und «Adaptation» mit MERYL STREEP. Dabei ist er bekannt dafür, dass er seine Stunts stets selber ausführt.
Der Sohn einer Westapachin und eines Navajoindianers kam in den Achtzigern nach Los Angeles. Seither hat er mit Grössen wie STEVEN SPIELBERG, ANTHONY MINGHELLA und RON HOWARD gearbeitet. Seinen Erfolg in Hollywood hat er nicht nur seinem schauspielerischen Können zu verdanken, sondern auch der Tatsache, dass er alle seine Stunts selber macht. Im Film «Pathfinder» hängt er kopfüber über einem Lagerfeuer und in dem Saisonfinale von «CSI: Miami» verlangt seine Rolle, 23 Stockwerke tief zu fallen. Dieser Stunt brachte ihm eine «Emmy»-Nominierung.
JAY TAVARE ist definitiv jemand, der eine Menge Energie an den Tisch bringt. Nach seinem täglichen Workout treffe ich den Schauspieler in einem der Szenecafés der Franklin Avenue. Freundlich erzählt er von seinen neuen Projekten, während ich an meinem Cappuccino schlürfe und er sich, trotz der Hitze, Tee bestellt.
Seine indianischen Wurzeln hat er bei all dem Hollywood-Glamour keineswegs vergessen. Er nützt seine Bekanntheit und seine grosse Fangemeinde, um aktive «Spirit-Helfer», Freiwillige für seine Charity-Organisationen, zu gewinnen, die der Unterstützung der indianischen Bevölkerung dienen. Native Americans, wie sie heute von der US-Regierung politisch korrekt genannt werden, waren eine lange Zeit eher vergessen in diesem Land.
Während wir in romantischer KARL-MAY-Nostalgie schweben, leben Indianer bis heute in Reservationcamps, abgeschottet von der restlichen Bevölkerung. JAY TAVARE erzählt: «Das Land, das damals von der US-Regierung an die indianische Bevölkerung abgegeben wurde, ist grösstenteils nicht ihr ursprüngliches Land. Meist handelt es sich dabei um Gebiete, für welche die restliche Bevölkerung ohnehin keinen Bedarf hatte. Auf diesen unfruchtbaren, abschüssigen Ländern leben viele Ureinwohner abgeschottet und mit Misstrauen gegenüber der westlichen Welt.» TAVARE besucht regelmässig die Jugend und steht hinter dem Selbstmordvorbeugungs-Programm «Honor Your Life» im Mescalero Apache Reservationcamp in New Mexico. Er nützt seinen indianischen Hintergrund und sein westliches Wissen, um eine Brücke zwischen den Kulturen zu bauen und Ängste abzubauen. Dabei fungiert er als «Spokesman» der ADOPT-A-NATIVE-ELDER ORGANISATION, die von LINDA MYERS ins Leben gerufen wurde. Spender und Freiwillige sorgen für Essensspenden, Kleidung und einfache medizinische Produkte für die indianische Bevölkerung der Camps. JAY TAVAREs eigenes Programm hilft dabei, die Navajo Elders mit Feuerholz für die kalten Wintermonate zu versorgen, ohne welches diese schlicht nicht überleben könnten.

The male descendant of an Indian Westapache and a Navajo came to Los Angeles in the eighties. Since coming to town he has worked with the likes of STEVEN SPIELBERG, and RON HOWARD ANTHONY MINGHELLA. His success in Hollywood is not only based on his great acting abilities, but also on the fact that he does all his own stunts. In the film "Pathfinder" he hangs upside down over a campfire, in the season finale of "CSI: Miami" his character has to fall 23 stories deep. This stunt even earned him an "Emmy" nomination.
Jay Tavare is definitely someone who brings a lot of energy to the table. After his daily workout I am meeting the actor in one of the cafes on Franklin Avenue. Politely, he talks about his new projects, while I sip my cappuccino and he, ignoring the heat, orders tea. He definitely hasn’t forgotten his Indian roots despite being surrounded by Hollywood glamour. He uses his fame and his large fan base to find active "spirit helpers" for his volunteer charity organizations, which serve to support the indigenous population. Native Americans, as the the U.S. government's calls have been forgotten about for a long time in this country. While we see the Indian Histroy coloured by a romantic KARL-MAY-nostalgia, Indians still live in reservation camps, isolated from the rest of the population. Jay Tavare says: "The land, which was allocated by the U.S. government to the Indian population in those days, is largely not their original country. In most cases these are areas for which the rest of the population had no need anyway. On these mostly barren, desolate and mountainous country many natives are still living isolated and with a distrust of the Western world.
Tavare regularly visits the youth of the reservations and is a big supporter of the suicide prevention program," Honor Your Life "in the Mescalero Apache Reservation in the New Mexico camp. He uses his Indian background and his Western knowledge to bridge the gap between cultures and reduce anxiety. He acts as the "Spokesman" for ADOPT-A-NATIVE ELDER AGENCY, which was launched by LINDA MYERS. Donors and volunteers provide food donations, clothing and basic medical products for the Indian population in the camps. TAVARES JAY’s own program helps to supply the Navajo Elders with firewood for the cold winter months to without which they simply could not survive.
